So you’ve come to visit a city/town, hit all the need-to-see places, keep the kids engaged, and you only have a day or two. How do you do all that without losing your cool? Of course, kids get bored. We can only expect them to visit as many landmarks, museums and historical places, until they need to. . . well, be just kids and have free play.

We’ve all been there many times. Apart from our GO-SLOW way of travelling/touring, knowing where the best playgrounds are ahead of a visit (just in case) have bought us some time and sanity with the little ones, particularly when we are on a summer camping road trip. Playgrounds (area de juegos de infantiles) are also a great way for your kids to meet local kids. If you are gonna be in this area. . .

Where are the bestFREE playgrounds in Jerez de la Frontera?

Plaza del Progresso:  a small one and a local favorite.  It’s smack dab in the center and the best part is that you can drink or dine or both at one of the three tapas bars/restaurants with outdoor seating while watching your kids play.  We met a few friends (locals and foreigners) at this spot.  Don’t be shy about engaging locals. Many speak English but are just too shy to speak it or engage on their own. This plaza has plenty of shade.

Plaza del Belen:  a new one (since summer 2018) with a wide open, pedestrian-only, play area that surround the playground in the old historic center.  Hardly any shade here.  Most locals wait until the evening (after siesta) to be here.  There’s one bar (Peña Flamenca Buena Gente) in this area for food and restroom/WC/toilet but it’s only open when there is a performance. Not many foreigners make it up this way so far. So, a great place to meet locals.

"Land A-hoy!" at the ship-themed playground at LUZ shopping. This can easily be a day trip for those who like to shop, dine and let children have their play here or at the LEGO fan factory next door and even watch a movie which is particularly inviting during the hot summer months.

A pirate-ship playground, LEGO Fan Factory and IKEA Smaaland at Centro Commercial LUZ shopping plaza, about 8-minute drive from the center. Yes, we have civilization here 😉 and these play spaces are FREE. You have to either take the bus (Circular buses 8 and 9 I think or take a 5-euro taxi).  The pirate ship-themed playground is outdoors and is next to the indoor LEGO playspace for kids over 3 years old.  The LEGO play space may have a queue and you may leave your kids for up to 2 hours while you dine/drink in the nearby watering holes.  The IKEA play space is 10 minutes walk away from the pirate-ship. There you may leave your kids for indoor play activities for up to 1 hour while you shop or eat.

Since its opening in October 2018, the indoor LEGO fan factory has been beneficial in bringing consumer traffic to this shopping area. The LEGO play area is FREE (no cost) to get in, though you may need to wait several minutes in line for registration.

Ciudad de los Ninos (City of Children).  You can take a short taxi ride or the same circular buses can get you here.  Note that those buses take about an hour and 45 minutes to go around.  That is, they will take you back to where they picked you up and it costs 1.20 euros each per ride.  This is a FREE park with certain areas for pay and you can easily spend 3 to 4 hours here.  It has sand pits, slides on hills, climbing structures and areas for little ones, among others.  We’re not sure of the hours during Semana Santa. Shaded areas and two tapas bars/restaurants.
