Father and Sons Bonding Time 🎵 Making Music+Video with Kids 🎅Jingle Bells-Dulce Navidad Mix👍

Happy New Year! Here’s a music video (on YouTube) of our very own, new and refreshing, family-friendly version of the popular Christmas song “Jingle Bells” with lyrics mixed with the Spanish version “Dulce Navidad con letra. It is an acoustic guitar-driven style, sung by kids, mixed with Villancicos Navideños (Spanish Christmas carols), in English and Spanish, performed in the style of Zambomba (Christmas songs done in festive flamenco style as uniquely done in Jerez de la Frontera, Andalucia, Spain). ¡Olé!

Father and Sons Bond by Making Music

My two young kids and I recorded it in our our old-but-professional home recording studio in December and released it just in time for the Big Day… for those of you who celebrate… and just for fun, for those of you who do not. Feliz fiestas!

As a happily unemployed full time father (if you had been following our blog, you know that there’s a family lifestyle change involved here…), I do spend a lot of time with my two young boys, especially when they come home from school and Mama is doing her part-time work. One of the things that we all loved was jamming and making our own music.

About a year ago, we finally recorded one of our ideas to turn traditional Christmas songs into something else; something with the infectious groove of the music of Jerez over the Christmas holiday–the Zambomba that lasts from the end of November until Christmas day, sometimes into the New Year.

That was “Joy to the World” por Rumba Flamenca, mixed with popular local medley of “Ven, ven, ven… en noche buena vente pa Jerez”, “Ande, ande, ande… la Marimorena and Ya Nienen Los Reyes Magos.” It was the original idea for mixing songs and traditions that the kids came up with.

We had a lot of fun doing recording the music and making the video, and made fun of ourselves (us parents) by attempting to sing and ending up quite out of tune. Oh well, take one for the kids, right>?! Here’s the link to “Joy to the World” music video.

Jingle Bells

Dashing through the snow. . . In a one-horse open sleigh

Over the fields we go. . . Laughing all the way

Bells on bob-tails ring. . .Making spirits bright

What fun it is to ride and sing a sleighing song tonight

Ohhhhh, Ohhhhhh, OHHHHH!

Jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way!

Oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh

HEY!

Jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way!

Oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh

Dulce Navidad

Navidad, navidad. . . Dulce Navidad

La Alegria de este dia. . . Hay que celebrar

EY!

Navidad, navidad. . . Dulce Navidad

La Alegria de este dia. . . Hay que celebrar

Me gusta el chicharon. . . Me encanta el Jamon [this we came up with during recording]

Vamos pa Jere’ con El Niño Emanuel [this Pepe added the reverent part]

Ya vienen bajando por las escaleras [this line is from Tangos del Titi del Triana]

La Zambomba de Jere. . . Ole, OLE, OLE!!! [this we came up with]

The Process of Recording Music in a Studio with Kids

We have several more Christmas music (in English-Spanish-Polish) in the works and have plenty of time, now, to release them for next Christmas. It takes a lot of time to record and produce the songs in the studio, especially when working with kids and ensuring that they do NOT get pressured into doing something that they do NOT want to do.

This means, I had about 15 minutes for each kid to lay down their vocal parts, assuming they know the lyrics by heart. Anything more than that and the magic within them start to turn into independent nuclear reaction. YOU PARENTS KNOW this!

During our music recording session the boys learn the process of laying down the vocal and instrumental tracks one by one.

Then we have to shoot and make the videos, equally (and ideally) in stressless mode. We’d typically get some footage for when we are visiting another place, such as Gibraltar or Morocco. Anyway, with the spirit of FUN FUN FUN FREE PLAY in the forefront, We’ll be ready for the next holiday season!

To make sure they know the words, I would play and sing the songs with them for 15 minutes a day, for several days and up to a week, prior to recording. Sometimes though, the boys are simply tired and don’t want to do anything, especially my four-year old who would say, “Tomorrow I will be ready, Tata, OK?” Of course.

My friend, Pepe Cabral, and I have already laid down our guitar tracks (yes, there are two guitars on each song to get that full stereo sound). We’d finish the raw tracks to about one song per day since we only had an hour to record together and I would usually tell him what I want at the beginning of the hour. The art of possibility is Pepe’s default when it comes to this.

Upcoming Christmas Music Playlist

So, what ‘s coming up? Santa Claus is Coming to Town, We Wish You a Merry Christmas, Mi Carbonero and a new medley of Ven Ven Ven (both in Spanish), a very cool version of Little Drummer Boy and a couple of Polish Christmas songs. Yeah, yeah, yeah. . . we’ll get ’em all out eventually.
